3rd Grade Biography Project
This post was submitted by Allison Moyer, 3rd grade teacher at Western Salisbury Elementary School.
The class read a biography in the StoryTown anthology on Ellen Ochoa, the world’s first female Hispanic astronaut. Additionally, StoryTown includes a lesson on how to write a biography. I felt it would be most meaningful for my students to learn how to write their own biography using an adult family member or close friend. The boys and girls were given about twenty interview questions. Once the interviews were completed, the students began drafting their biographies in school. After editing and revising, the final copy was typed using Pages. The students then illustrated a portrait of the person they wrote about. To publish the pieces, the boys and girls first took a picture of their illustration using Photo Booth. They then recorded a movie of themselves reading their biography using iMovie. The picture of their illustration was used as the backdrop in their movie. This project proved to be a huge success, plus it is a new and exciting way for the students to learn how to write a biography!

I love the hand-drawn portraits of the biographees and the digital portraits of not only them but the biographers!
