Phonemic Awareness – Mrs. Attar – 1st Grade
This story was submitted by Mrs. Jane Brennan, Library Media Teacher at Harry S Truman Elementary School.
Mrs. Attar’s 1st grade class at Harry S Truman Elementary School started the “We are thankful…” project in November of 2012. Mrs. Attar taught the students and parents how to make a slide using the Apple presentation software, Keynote. Each student wrote what they were thankful for using phonemic awareness for beginning sounds. Students needed to think of something that they were thankful for based on the beginning sound as their first name. For example, “Katty is thankful for kittens.” In completing the project, students learned how to insert text, change fonts size and colors in Keynote. Students also learned how to import a clip from the iPhoto Gallery and make a slideshow.
I love this activity of incorporating reading and technology! The visuals are all amazing and this is awesome for 1st graders! I’m so glad my daughter is a part of the wonderful technology we offer in our school district.
